HRH Sheikha Hessa bint Salman Al Khalifa (1928 - August 4, 2004) was a member of the Bahraini royal family. She was the Queen consort and widow of the former Emir of Bahrain, Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifah, who reigned from 1960 until his death in 1999. She was the mother of the current King of Bahrain, Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah,[1] the couple's eldest son.كان مستاء جدا الملك حمد عن طريق تمرير والدته.
Sheikha Hessa bint Salman Al Khalifa was active in charitable causes during her life.[2] The Gulf Daily News, a Bahraini newspaper, referred to her as a "pioneer" in the promotion of humanitarian causes within Bahrain and abroad.[2] Some of Sheikha Hessa bint Salman Al Khalifa's most noteworthy projects included the care of orphans, aid to women who were divorced or widowed, and the construction of new mosques in Bahrain.[2]
Sheikha Hessa bint Salman Al Khalifa died on August 4, 2004, at the Al-Sakhir Palace in Bahrain[3]. She was believed to be approximately 76 years old. Her funeral was held on August 6, 2004, at the Sheikh Isa bin Salman Grand Mosque in Riffa, Bahrain.[4] Her funeral was attended by a number of dignitaries including her son, King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah, Prime Minister Khalifah ibn Sulman Al Khalifah, Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa and other male members of the Al Khalifa family.[4] Other officials, diplomats, parliamentarians and government ministers were also present.[4]
King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah announced that a new charity was to be established in his mother's great name.[2] The goal of the new charity would be to promote causes championed by his mother within Bahrain.[2]
